In studies, 5-amino-1MQ is described as an inhibitor of nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT), an enzyme that is highly expressed in adipose tissue. Inhibition is reported to increase the availability of NAD+ and S-adenosylmethionine in the cell and thereby influence the energy metabolism of fat cells.
