BPC-157: what is it and what does research say?

BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide of 15 amino acids, derived from a protein described in human gastric juice. This article explains what BPC-157 is, what is studied in cell and animal models, why a pharmacy does not sell it and what to check when you buy BPC-157 as research material.

What is BPC-157?

BPC stands for "body protection compound": a protein described in human gastric juice. BPC-157 is a 15-amino-acid piece of that protein, which makes it a pentadecapeptide (penta-deca means fifteen).

The research material is made synthetically and supplied as a freeze-dried powder in a vial. BrabantLabs supplies BPC-157 in 5 mg and 10 mg vials.

  • Sequence: Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val (GEPPPGKPADDAGLV).
  • Length: 15 amino acids.
  • Molecular mass: about 1419.5 g/mol.

What is being studied?

Research into BPC-157 takes place in cell and animal models; most of it in rodent models. Far less has been published on it than on common research peptides, and a large share of the publications comes from one research group in Zagreb.

  • The gastrointestinal mucosa: the peptide's origin makes the gastrointestinal tract an obvious research area in animal models.
  • Angiogenesis: the formation of new blood vessels in experimental models.

BPC-157 and TB-500

BPC-157 is often mentioned together with TB-500, a peptide derived from thymosin beta-4. They are two different substances with a different origin. Little has been published on the combination as such; the literature is mainly about the separate substances. The shop lists them separately, as a fixed bundle and as a combination in one vial.

Why can't you find BPC-157 at the pharmacy?

BPC-157 has no marketing authorisation anywhere. It is intended solely as research material for laboratory use, not for human or animal consumption. That is why a pharmacy does not sell it; you buy it from a supplier of research peptides.

Buying BPC-157: what to look for

How to read such a report is explained in Reading a lab report. At BrabantLabs every certificate is online under lab results, searchable by product and lot number.

  • A certificate of analysis per lot, with purity measured by HPLC.
  • A mass measurement (MS) that confirms identity: the measured mass should match about 1419.5 g/mol.
  • A lot number on the vial that matches the lot on the certificate.
  • The net amount per vial in mg, so you can calculate the concentration of your solution.

Storage and dissolving

  • As powder: briefly in the fridge (2–8 °C), longer in the freezer (−20 °C or colder). Let the vial reach room temperature before opening it.
  • Dissolving: usually in bac water. The steps are in Dissolving peptides; work out the concentration with the peptide calculator.
  • Dissolved: in the fridge, do not freeze, and use within about 28 days.

What determines the price of BPC-157?

The price depends mainly on the amount per vial (mg), the measured purity and whether an independent lab tested every lot. So compare the price per mg, not per vial, and only between suppliers that show a certificate per lot. The current price per strength is on the BPC-157 product page.

Frequently asked questions

What does BPC stand for?
For "body protection compound", the name of the protein from human gastric juice of which BPC-157 is a 15-amino-acid fragment.
Is BPC-157 a peptide?
Yes, a pentadecapeptide: a chain of 15 amino acids. It is made synthetically and supplied as a freeze-dried powder.
How do you store BPC-157?
As powder briefly in the fridge and longer in the freezer (−20 °C or colder). Dissolved, in the fridge, not frozen, and used within about 28 days.
Can I order BPC-157 and TB-500 together?
Yes. The shop lists them separately, as a fixed bundle with a 10% bundle discount and as a combination in one vial.
